Social Media Do’s and Don’ts

Wow, did you ever think we would get to a world where someone on the opposite side of the globe can be so easily accessible to the common man. You no longer have to be an executive with private jets to have access to people and in essence strangers all around the world.

Social media has changed business ownership. Social media is all about relationships, relationships, relationships. It is not an avenue for the impatient or the week hearted. It is an avenue for the strong and for the sincere.

Many people are completely confused as to what social media is. I hope this post can shed some light on many frustrating tactics that are used that are truly unappreciated by most.

Social media is a way to develop a network of friends and family that respect you and trust you and would come to you when they need your services. So, the question lies, if you claim to be a business owner or entrepreneur or network marketer or coach, do you really know what you are doing?

First, don’t call yourself an expert if your not. I’d rather work with a someone who has a student mentality than thinks they are a know-it-all. Odds are you really don’t know much. I have been in business, marketing and sales for over 12 years and its frustrating that a 70 year old couple can claim they are marketing experts, when they were farming crops just 2 years ago. Clearly they do not. They do however know how to spam.

Second, Spam is “ugh” just plain frustrating. What is spam? Most people think if they are offering you a business opportunity or some free coupons on your wall that it is not considered spam. Whatever marketing “guru” who told you to call yourself a professional and place your links everywhere, totally misled you. Unless you develop a repoire with your network, Do Not post links on their wall. That is simply saying. “I don’t really care about you, just buy from me.” It is not a sincere offer of services, because there is always something the user has to do, whether it be give up personal information or pay a low price of $1.99 to get. So don’t fool yourselves or think you are fooling others.

Do not place your links within their status posts, that is frowned upon as well. No-one cares about what you have to say or sell, until they care about you.

Thirdly, for social media to work effectively for you, you must READ, as oppose to be quick to send your links off. How frustrating it is for me to get a message that says, “I am a business coach, let me know if you need anything or let me share with you my network marketing secrets”

– My response to that was if you were sincere about me and getting to know me, you would have clicked on the “info” tab and realized 1. I am a real business coach and If you want to collaborate on ideas, I am open to that  2. I am not a network marketer. So you are automatically marked off in my list to “spam” – Someone who does not care about me, just wants to sell me something.

So all your efforts are now futile.

Social media is about the sincerity and quality of the character you are. Do not listen to “marketing experts” that say place your link all over the place.

If you want to be taken serious, you need to be serious. Share your experience and advice on your profession. Don’t be quick to want to charge others for info that you didn’t even create yourself. Share your own personal experiences on the topic. No-one likes to be sold anymore.

I see this quote all the time “If you want to be successful in life, you must help others succeed” (paraphrased) Well if you want to charge for every bit of info or “expert advice” you are not “helping” anyone. You are trying to bait them in, like a wolf in sheep’s clothing. And most people can see right through that.
